At CANESS, everything starts with a simple idea: authenticity. Our name literally means “come in,” and that sense of welcoming hospitality became the foundation of the brand. From the very first sketches with Hand Studio Sydney and Squillace, we knew we wanted something clear, inviting, and unpretentious—a warm, open-door invitation to anyone stepping into our space.
We asked ourselves: how do we translate this message into something tangible? Every element—from the logo on the menu and the coasters under your icy Pineapple Margarita, to the cutlery cutting and spooning into that plump Prawns Saganaki swimming in rich Ouzo and Cherry Tomatoes sauce, must work together to form a complete and intentional experience.
With simplicity, there’s nowhere to hide—every element had to contribute to the whole experience.
Guests often tell us the space feels like a neighbourhood bar in Melbourne, or sometimes like Spain or the Mediterranean—but always familiar, effortless, and welcoming. By stripping away the usual “wow effects” with no flashy interiors, no over-designed branding, we created something timeless, grounded, and quietly confident.
This kind of simplicity isn’t basic—it’s demanding. But when it all comes together, the result is lasting, memorable, and truly special.
A 5-Minute Q&A with Clara, Owner & Director of Hand Studio
Q: How did you get started on CANESS’ look?
A: We wanted something simple and welcoming. Those little lo-fi door illustrations were an easy first step—they just say “come in” in the friendliest way possible.
Q: What inspired the overall style?
A: We looked at old-school signage—tobacconists, laundromats, tape shops. Bold, practical, built to last. Our typeface mirrors that: clean, confident, and unpretentious.
Q: The illustrations have such a unique vibe—what’s behind them?
A: They’re rough, paint-style, inspired by early Windows paint programs. Honest, nostalgic, and a little imperfect—just like the experience we hope guests have at CANESS.
Q: And the colours? They feel really warm.
A: That’s intentional! Earthy browns as the base, retro red for a pop, and muted old-world purple for personality. You’ll see them everywhere—menus, uniforms, walls—tying everything together in a cohesive, tactile way.
